Life at Woodhouse: Curriculum & Enrichment

Life at Woodhouse: Curriculum & Enrichment

The best of both worlds: a nurturing middle school model

Woodhouse Academy offers children a unique educational experience by combining the nurture of a smaller school with the specialist teaching, facilities and opportunities normally associated with a secondary school.

Our secondary model means that children joining us in Year 5 benefit from strong relationships and a nurturing environment, while also accessing specialist subject teachers and facilities that go beyond what they would typically experience in a primary setting.

As students progress into years 7 and 8, they continue to benefit from our middle school model. Unlike larger secondary schools, our Key Stage 3 students remain at the heart of our community. They are well known by staff, develop strong relationships with teachers and have opportunities to take on meaningful leadership roles, including Prefects and Sports Representatives.

This provides our students with the confidence, independence and academic foundations needed for success at Key Stage 4 and beyond.

High expectations and a love of learning

We are proud of our aspirational culture and strong academic outcomes. Our Key Stage 2 SATs results are consistently above national averages, reflecting our commitment to high expectations and excellent teaching.

Our curriculum places a particular emphasis on the core subjects, ensuring students develop the essential knowledge and skills needed for future success.

Reading underpins our entire curriculum. We know that confident readers become confident learners, which is why every student takes part in a dedicated 20-minute whole-school reading session every day.

This daily focus helps students develop vocabulary, comprehension, confidence and a genuine love of reading.

A curriculum that inspires and challenges

Learning at Woodhouse extends far beyond the classroom.

Our broad and enriching curriculum allows students to discover their strengths, develop practical skills and explore new interests. Our 2.5-acre grounds and local area provide opportunities for outdoor learning and meaningful experiences.

Students benefit from excellent specialist facilities, including:

  • Two fully equipped science labs

  • A design and technology workshop

  • An art studio

  • A dedicated music room

  • A cookery suite

  • Three computer rooms

  • Performing arts equipment for our annual school production

Our practical subjects develop creativity, independence and problem-solving skills, while our performing arts opportunities allow students to build confidence, teamwork and self-expression.

Developing healthy, confident and active young people

Our strong PE department plays a key role in developing healthy and active habits for life.

We are committed to ensuring PE is inclusive and accessible for all students, while also promoting ambition and competitiveness through inter-house competitions and external fixtures.

Sport at Woodhouse develops teamwork, resilience, confidence and pride in representing our school.
