Learning Beyond the Classroom
At Woodhouse Academy, we believe that learning does not stop when pupils leave the classroom. There are three main ways in which pupils can continue to practise, consolidate and extend their learning beyond lessons.
These opportunities are designed to support essential skills, encourage independence and give pupils the freedom to explore their interests.
1. Core Skills
Core Skills activities focus on the essential knowledge and skills that pupils need to practise regularly.
English: Pupils are expected to read every day and complete their reading log so that this can be monitored and celebrated. An additional English homework activity will also be set once per term.
Maths: Pupils are given a Core Skills Check Sheet once each week. These activities provide regular practice of key mathematical skills and are marked together in class.
2. Enrichment
In our non-core curriculum subjects, we use the term Enrichment rather than traditional homework.
We want pupils to recognise that valuable learning can happen in many different places; at home, through school clubs, during visits and activities, or simply by exploring the wider world around them.
Each subject provides an Enrichment Menu containing a range of activities for pupils to choose from. This gives pupils greater independence and allows them to select activities that interest them. There is no fixed deadline for Enrichment activities and pupils can complete as many as they wish.
3. Additional Home Learning
Every curriculum area also provides carefully selected websites and educational resources that pupils can use whenever they wish. These resources can be particularly useful for:
revisiting something learned in class;
practising a skill;
preparing for future learning;
developing confidence in a particular topic; or
exploring a subject in greater depth.

Housepoints and Go for Gold
Enrichment is linked to our Housepoint system. Most completed activities will earn pupils 1 Housepoint, while every subject also includes a special 'Go for Gold' activity worth 3 Housepoints.
Supporting Independence
Our approach is designed to balance essential practice with choice and independence. Core Skills provide the regular practice pupils need in English and Maths, while Enrichment and Additional Home Learning allow pupils to explore learning more independently and follow their own interests. We encourage parents and carers to take an interest in the activities pupils choose, celebrate their efforts and encourage them to make use of the opportunities available.
